PROFESSOR CURES HICCUPS
by Dana Bell
When most people think about retirement, they think about rest, relaxation and vacations.
But when Larry R. Nolan, Assistant Professor of Technology, thinks about retirement, he thinks about something totally different. He thinks about hiccups.
Nolan, who retires this May after 27 years of teaching at Southeastern, won't be sitting around, he will be working on manufacturing and distributing a new product.
And thanks to Nolan's new product, hiccups may not be a problem anymore.
Hiccups Away has been a 20-year project for Nolan. He has spent summers and time-off for the past 15 years researching and perfecting his product.
The product, about the size of a package of catsup, stops the hiccups. It has been tested many times and has a 90% success rate in cases that weren't medically related.
The key to success with this product is instant gratification, Nolan said. In the world we live today, people always want instant gratification. My product gives them that by stopping their hiccups instantly.
Three years ago, Nolan sent his product to the Wisconsin Innovation Service Center for evaluation, and is currently awaiting label approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Nolan's new company, Nolan Research, Inc., will make this product available for the consumer to purchase after FDA approval of the label. He is, however, giving away free samples of his product through the internet.
As soon as the label is approved, Nolan will turn on his manufacturing machine, and Hiccups Away will be available to everyone.
The machine has the capability to produce 3600 packages per hour. The ingredients in this product are natural.
I have enjoyed teaching here at Southeastern for the past 27 years. It has been very rewarding and I feel very fortunate for having had this time here. I look forward to starting a new business venture and a new career, said Nolan.
Nolan received a Bachelor's degree from Southeastern in 1970 and a Master's degree in 1973 also from Southeastern.
Before coming to Southeastern, Nolan taught for five years at Elkins Institute in Dallas, Texas.
I know I will miss being here, especially the students, I've had a lot of good students. I also feel like it's time for me to do something new and different, said Nolan.
On April 4 1997, Nolan will be showing his product at the U.S. Congressman Wes Watkin's New Product and Process Fair in McAlester, Ok.
